Brett accepted a scholarship to study acting in Los Angeles, California. He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Some of the Academy's accredited alumni include Edward G. Robinson, Robert Redford, Spencer Tracy, Kirk Douglas, Jason Robards and Adrien Brody. While at the Academy, Brett excelled in acting and film production and was invited to attend the elite Third-Year Repertory Company.
Shortly after performing in the Third-Year Company, Brett was granted membership into the Screen Actors Guild for his work in the Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy Jingle All the Way (1996). He then auditioned and won the opportunity to act opposite Heather Locklear on the hit Fox television show Melrose Place (1992). Soon thereafter, Brett portrayed the role of a drug-addicted student on the WB series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1996). He was cast in the lead role of "Danny Hansford" in the A&E network television movie Midnight in Savannah (1997), based on the controversial book, "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil", by John Berendt. The director of Midnight in Savannah (1997) was impressed with Brett's performance and immediately cast him as a Civil War Corporal in the A&E television movie Foot Soldiers (1998). Brett then took on a lead role in Thinking Positive (1999), a pilot episode for Showtime Networks about dangers young people are facing today. Getting back to his Texas roots, Brett coined the phrase "It sure tastes like it!" in a celebrated national campaign for "Pace Picante". He subsequently joined the cast of the ever-popular NBC soap opera Passions (1999).
Brett played B-24 bomber pilot "Pete Newell" in the World War II drama Beautiful Dreamer (2006), opposite Brooke Langton, Barry Corbin and Colin Egglesfield. Brett is an original member of the distinguished Studio C Acting & Filmmaking Institute. Lead under the auspices of former Yale Purple Canyon Ensemble member John Coppola, Studio C members are devoted to the crafts of acting, narrative writing, storytelling, and film/camera technique.
