Born in Belfast, David started acting and directing plays at Cambridge University. He graduated with a First in Classics and made documentaries for the BBC before pursuing his passion for comedy.
David won a Best Comedy BAFTA for the first series of "That Mitchell & Webb Look", starring David Mitchell, Robert Webb and Olivia Colman and described by The Hollywood Reporter as "uproarious and cleverly cheeky." The second series was BAFTA-nominated.
As the lead director of "Fresh Meat", written by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, David gave Jack Whitehall his first acting job and set the style for a show described by The Guardian as "smart, sympathetic and pretty much adorable from the get-go." "Fresh Meat" was named Best New Comedy at the British Comedy Awards, Best Scripted Comedy at the RTS Awards and Best European Comedy at the Monte Carlo TV Festival.
"The funniest, cleverest, most imaginative and original television I have seen." That's how The Times summed up "Inside No.9", written by and starring Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. David directed all six films in the first series and returned to direct two films for series four. "Inside No.9", with a stellar cast of guest actors including Gemma Arterton, won two awards at the 2014 Banff Media Festival: Best Comedy and Best Entertainment. In 2015, it won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Comedy Performance.
"A Midsummer Night's Dream", David's bold new feature-length version of Shakespeare's comedy from a script by Russell T. Davies, was broadcast by the BBC1 in a primetime Saturday evening slot in 2016. Described by The Radio Times as "stunningly ballsy...utterly life-affirming", it won an RTS Craft Award and was nominated for Best Single Drama at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.
Kerr is also a celebrated commercials director. "Playthings", his darkly comic gun-control PSA, sparked articles in Time Magazine and The Washington Post. It won Best PSA at the AICP Awards in 2015, securing its place in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.
2018 sees David Kerr's feature-film directing debut via Working Title/Universal Studios: "Johnny English Strikes Again", starring Rowan Atkinson and Emma Thompson.
